Gemini 4 Carbon API Pricing Explained (Introductory Rates)

Independent explainer, not affiliated with Google. Prices change; Google's pricing page is authoritative. Gemini 4 Carbon is not available on Carbon Studio.

Gemini 4 Carbon pricing got almost as much attention as its benchmarks. Here is what has been reported, how to estimate costs, and what to watch for before you budget around Gemini 4 Carbon.

The introductory rates

Reported introductory Gemini 4 Carbon API pricing:

| Item | Price | | - | - | | Input tokens | $2.00 per 1M | | Output tokens | $10.00 per 1M | | Cached input tokens | 95% off the input price ($0.10 per 1M) |

Several sources say these Gemini 4 Carbon prices are introductory and will later rise to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Google's announcement does not clearly confirm the increase, so treat it as unverified.

A quick cost example

Say an agent built on Gemini 4 Carbon reads a 40,000-token codebase summary and writes 4,000 tokens of changes, 100 times a day.

  • Input: 40,000 × 100 = 4M tokens → $8.00
  • Output: 4,000 × 100 = 0.4M tokens → $4.00
  • Daily total at introductory rates: $12.00

If most of that 40,000-token context is reused across calls and cached, the input cost drops toward $0.40, and the daily total falls to about $4.40. Caching is the biggest lever on any Gemini 4 Carbon bill.

At the rumored later rates, the uncached example would double to $24.00 per day.

Why output is five times input

Long-horizon reasoning is where Gemini 4 Carbon shines, and reasoning means generating many tokens. Output-heavy workloads such as long plans, code generation and multi-step agents will be dominated by the $10 output rate. Design prompts so Gemini 4 Carbon returns only what you need, and stream long tasks so you can stop early.

Who can actually pay these prices today

Pricing is published, but Gemini 4 Carbon access is limited: it is rolling out to cyber defenders first, with wider availability through Google's Fairwind Program and no public date. Most developers can't buy Gemini 4 Carbon tokens yet, regardless of price.

How this compares with media generation

Token pricing applies to text and code. Images, video and music are priced differently, usually per image or per second of output. On Carbon Studio, for example, an image costs from 4 credits and a 5-second 480P video from 50 credits on our pricing page. None of those runs use Gemini 4 Carbon; they use the models named on each run.
