Gemini 4 Carbon arrived two weeks after Gemini 4 Argon. Here is how the two Gemini 4 models compare on benchmarks, focus areas, pricing and access.

Gemini 4 Carbon vs Gemini 4 Argon: What Changed in Two Weeks

Independent analysis. Carbon Studio is not affiliated with Google, and Gemini 4 Carbon is not available on this site.

Google shipped Gemini 4 Argon and, roughly two weeks later, announced Gemini 4 Carbon. That is an unusually short gap between two flagship models, and it raises the obvious question: what does Gemini 4 Carbon do that Gemini 4 Argon doesn't?

The headline: a big jump

Google's own framing is direct. Introducing Gemini 4 Carbon, Google's Logan Kilpatrick called it "a big jump over Argon". Google lists four areas of improvement for Gemini 4 Carbon:

  • Cybersecurity, where Gemini 4 Carbon is described as state of the art.
  • Long-horizon tasks that need sustained planning over many steps.
  • Usability in domains like coding.
  • Alignment, with Gemini 4 Carbon described as more aligned than its predecessor.

Benchmarks

The clearest public number for Gemini 4 Carbon is first place on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5.0, with a score of 59. The index was revised to be harder in that version, so the result is not just a saturated leaderboard. Other evaluators are less unanimous: Vals AI places Gemini 4 Carbon second of 29 models on its Vals Index, at 70.36%.

On security, Gemini 4 Carbon posts 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro, 54.8% on ExploitGym and 71.0% on CWE-bench. Comparable public Argon figures are thinner, which is itself telling: cybersecurity is the area Google chose to lead with for Gemini 4 Carbon.

Access: the real difference today

For most people the decisive difference is availability. Gemini 4 Argon is the Gemini 4 model you can use broadly. Gemini 4 Carbon is going to cyber defenders first, with wider access promised through the Fairwind Program and no public date. Until that changes, Argon is the practical choice and Gemini 4 Carbon is the one to watch.

Pricing

Reported introductory pricing for Gemini 4 Carbon is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input 95% cheaper. Some reports suggest Gemini 4 Carbon pricing will later rise to $4 and $20, which Google has not clearly confirmed. Check Google's pricing pages before planning a budget around either model.

Which should you plan around?

  • Building now: use Gemini 4 Argon through official channels.
  • Security teams: apply for early Gemini 4 Carbon access if you qualify.
  • Long-running agents and large refactors: design your system so you can swap in Gemini 4 Carbon later; its long-horizon gains are aimed at you.
  • Images, video and music: neither model is a media generator. Use dedicated models, such as the ones in our studio.
